Eight students from Pusan National University in Busan, South Korea, wrapped up a two-week travel writing and photography short course at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) as part of the university’s overseas Summer/Winter Programme recently.
The students – Kim Hyun Joon, Dayeon Kang, Chae-a Lee, Hong Yuna, Yuri Hong, See Hyun Jeon, Minji Kim and Ji Yoo Lee – are undergraduate students majoring in media and communications studies.
The short course, which ran from January 8 to 20, offered the students an immersive experience where they honed their writing and photography techniques and delved into the rich cultural tapestry of Sarawak. The journey included a city tour, a visit to Niah National Park, and an authentic experience in a traditional longhouse at Sungai Asap, Belaga.
The group’s leader, Kim Hyun Joon, said it was his first time visiting Malaysia. He mentioned that his professor informed him about an international winter programme offered by Curtin Malaysia.
He expressed his liking for the longhouse stay, finding it a unique experience. He said he was very impressed by the longhouse folks’ cultural performances, including the lilting sounds of the sapé, and took the opportunity to don the traditional attire.
According to Kim, the group will be giving presentations on their experiences upon their return to Pusan National University.
Director of SPACE at Curtin Malaysia Associate Professor Fidella Tiew, who accompanied the students on their visit to the longhouse along with lead instructor of the programme, Peter Jamba Anak Ental, expressed enthusiasm about the success of the course.
“It’s heartening to see students from Pusan National University embrace the opportunity to expand their horizons through travel, writing and photography. The cross-cultural exchange enhances their academic journey and contributes to the global community,” said Associate Professor Tiew.
