South Korea wildfire contained after overnight battle

ANN/THE KOREA HERALD  – A wildfire that reignited in the southern county of Hadong, South Korea has been largely brought under control as of Tuesday, following extensive overnight efforts by firefighting crews. The area, located approximately 290 kilometres southeast of Seoul, was previously struck by the nation’s worst wildfires on record just last month.

According to the Korea Forest Service, around 99 per cent of the wildfire had been contained by 11pm on Monday. The agency initially issued a Level 2 fire response and deployed 36 helicopters along with ground personnel in a bid to suppress the flames.

However, the main fire fronts could not be fully subdued before nightfall due to challenging conditions.

In response, authorities escalated efforts overnight, mobilising a total of 753 personnel and 72 pieces of equipment, including fire engines and bulldozers, to continue battling the blaze.

The forest service announced plans to resume aerial operations using helicopters after sunrise to fully extinguish any remaining hotspots.

Meanwhile, officials reported that 506 residents affected by the fire had evacuated to a nearby school for safety.

Emergency services are continuing to monitor the area closely and provide support to displaced individuals.
