Sole representative in Asian Para Games vows to ‘try my best’

National para-athlete Shari bin Haji Juma’at will represent the Sultanate in the fourth Asian Para Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China from October 22 to 28.

Shari will compete in the athletic event of shot put F55 yesterday.

Shari, in an interview, said, “I will try my best and Insya Allah, I hope I could break my personal record and bring glory to the country.” 

Meanwhile, Haji Ali Yusri said, “Our preparation began since our return from Cambodia for the ASEAN Para Games.

“This year, the organiser of the Asian Para Games has implemented a new system of selection whereby para-athletes are required to fulfil the established criteria based on minimum qualifying standard for each event such as active participation of competition organised by the International Paralympic Committee and pass a qualifying test.

“As a result, only one para-athlete from four was eligible to compete.”

A national flag handover ceremony took place at the Brunei International Airport.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad handed over the flag to chef de mission of the Brunei contingent Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor.

Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo, Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the MCYS Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah as well as officials were also present.

This is the fourth time that the Sultanate is participating in the Asian Para Games. – James Kon
