Solar energy boosts commitment to sustainability

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam’s (BIBD) new 60kWh photovoltaic (PV) system, inaugurated yesterday, marks a significant stride in the bank’s journey towards sustainability and environmental stewardship. As the first financial institution in Bandar Seri Begawan to install rooftop solar panels, BIBD demonstrates its commitment to a greener and more resilient future for Brunei.

Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman officiated the launch as BIBD’s chairman.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Development, Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, BIBD’s Board of Directors, Syariah Advisory Body and BIBD management and staff were also present.

BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Junaidi bin Haji Masri emphasised the significance of this milestone: “Today, as we switch on this solar system, we are doing more than powering a building; we are empowering our community. This installation sets a new benchmark for sustainable practices within Brunei’s financial sector and I hope it will serve as inspiration for others to follow suit.”

The solar PV system is expected to generate enough renewable energy to significantly reduce the bank’s carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 50 metric tonnes annually.

This is equivalent to preventing the emissions produced from burning over 5,000 gallons of gasoline or planting 750 trees each year.

By embracing solar energy, BIBD not only reduces its carbon footprint but also achieves significant cost savings, which can be channelled towards community initiatives and improved customer services. This initiative sets a new standard for sustainable practices within Brunei’s financial sector and inspires other commercial enterprises to adopt renewable energy solutions.

BIBD’s efforts align with Brunei Vision 2035’s aspiration for a dynamic and environmentally responsible economy.

By actively supporting the nation’s environmental goals through its sustainability framework, BIBD is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also contributing positively to the community and environment. – Lyna Mohamad
