SMARTER Brunei conducts bake sale in support of Palestine

The Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education, and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei is conducting a bake sale to show support for Palestine, with the profits channelled to the Palestine Humanitarian Fund.

Chief Executive Officer and Vice President I of SMARTER Brunei Sharifah Adila Surya @ Malai Adila Surya binti Malai Haji Abdullah said her students wanted to do something for the people in Gaza.

“They did not simply want to donate money; they wanted to do more and raise awareness,” she said. “We saw this as an opportunity to also show solidarity with the people in Gaza, especially since the children and adults there may become disabled after all the injuries. Any amount helps.”

She said SMARTER Brunei also wanted to showcase that people with autism are equally empathetic towards others, erasing the misconception they do not feel empathy.

SMARTER Brunei collaborated with and helped promote Projek FEED for their events, with Projek FEED providing SMARTER Brunei a table to sell at their events while providing the tools to help the students to create designs for their cookies.

“We wanted to show the public that, despite being an non-governmental organisation, we can show solidarity.

“My teachers and students were so motivated to make these cookies and had a lot of fun creating the designs,” the chief executive added.

So far, 500 cookies have been sold with Projek FEED’s help in promoting the sale.

SMARTER Brunei hopes to reach BND2,000 before donating to the fund.

“Our last date for order is December 7 and we hope a lot more will help us meet our target before our students hand over the profits to the fund.” – Lyna Mohamad
