SMARTER Brunei celebrates World Autism Awareness Day with Khatam Al-Qur’an Ceremony

In conjunction with World Autism Awareness Day, SMARTER Brunei proudly hosted a Khatam Al-Qur’an ceremony on Saturday, attended by Dr Eddy Fazlin bin Haji Amdan, the Acting Director of the Department of Special Education at the Ministry of Education, as the guest of honour.

The event, held to celebrate the achievements of students who have completed their Qur’anic recitation, highlighted the importance of inclusivity in religious and cultural practices, bringing together 60 participants.

Among the participants were 22 students with autism and dedicated staff—a spiritual milestone that reflects the perseverance, dedication, and potential of individuals with autism (IWAs) in Brunei.

As part of its Ramadan initiative, Smarter Brunei has also continued its “Visiting the Mosque” programme alongside the Khatam Al-Qur’an. This year, there has been a significant increase in student participation. The programme allows students to experience the mosque environment in a supportive and inclusive setting, while learning Jawi and reciting surahs from the Qur’an.

Recognising its positive impact, Smarter Brunei is committed to continuing this initiative beyond Ramadan—ensuring that autistic individuals have ongoing access to religious education and spiritual enrichment.

“This year’s Ramadan has been especially meaningful as we see more students joining our mosque visits, learning Jawi, and engaging in Qur’anic recitation. It’s a step forward in fostering confidence and inclusivity in religious spaces,” said Malai Didi, CEO and Vice President 1 of Smarter Brunei.

By celebrating World Autism Awareness Day with a Khatam Al-Qur’an and expanding its Visiting the Mosque programme, Smarter Brunei continues its mission of empowering autistic individuals through education, faith, and community engagement. The organisation remains steadfast in advocating for greater understanding, acceptance, and support for the autism community in Brunei. – Lyna Mohamad
