Skateboarders in the Belait District held a meet at the Skate Park near Kampong Pandan Lagoon on Sunday to promote the sport, in conjunction with International Go Skateboarding Day.
The event, organised by the Kampong Pandan 7 Skateboarding Community, saw enthusiastic participants showcase their skills and talent.
Pengiran Saiful Bahrin bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad, one of the organisers, said the event slowly grew annually since it was first formed three years ago.
“At first, it was just a gathering of veteran skaters from the Belait District. This then slowly expanded over the years to include the youth, as they were inspired to join by these activities,” he explained.
He hopes that the event will galvanise the skating community to share their love and passion for the sport, as well as be a platform for the sport to develop by encouraging the youth to join.
The event saw the Street League Skateboarding (SLS) Competition. Skaters saw who can perform as many tricks as possible within a minute, before having five attempts to execute the best of their repertoire.
Other activities held include a Skate Race Open and Old Skool Skater Race, which saw skaters loop around the park to determine who was the fastest, as well as a finger skateboard showcase and competition.
Pengiran Saiful Bahrin added that some members of the Belait District skating community will be participating in a similar celebration on July 3 at Berakas stadium. – Daniel Lim
