Six US bound for leadership programme

Five students and a teacher from the Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong) selected to participate in this year’s Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Programme (SEAYLP), left for the United States (US) yesterday.

The delegation includes teacher Nurul Hadina binti Haji Alias and students, Mohammad Adi Daniel bin Mohammad Ramle, Adrian Iskandar bin Mohamad Gadaffi, Muhammad Fahrin bin Muhammad Juleezam, Nur Farisha binti Mohd Shukriwan and Nur Batrisya binti Dzul’izzie Abi’rafdhyie. US Embassy and Ministry of Education (MoE) officials were present at the send-off ceremony at the Brunei International Airport including Acting Senior Special Duties Officer (Corporate) of the Department of Schools Haji Juma’ata Sonadey bin Haji Mornie.

This year marks the 12th SEAYLP exchange programme for Bruneians since its inauguration in 2009, said US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Katherine Ntiamoah.

“Through our ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Education, this programme has enriched the lives and leadership skills of Bruneian youth for over a decade, while strengthening the people-to-people ties between Brunei and the US.” The three-week programme focuses on civic education, leadership, diversity and volunteerism. The programme fully funded by the US Department of State will take place at Northern Illinois University (NIU) from today to May 12.

SEAYLP focuses on education, leadership and professional development, fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

The participants were selected by the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam in collaboration with the MoE. The exchange programme brings high school students and educators from ASEAN member countries to NIU for the three-week youth development programme. SEAYLP provides participants with hands-on activities, workshops, seminars and site visits. – Lyna Mohamad
