Six months’ jail for thieving maid

The Magistrate’s Court on Monday handed a six months’ jail sentence to an Indonesian maid who stole from her employer’s home in Kampong Madang last April.

Nurhapipit justified her actions by saying that she was fed up with her employer’s wife who had been scolding the maid for unsatisfactory work.

She stole cash and items to be sold to buy an air ticket home.

Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed in court that the defendant stole over BND600, a smartphone, two gold necklaces, seven gold bracelets, two gold rings, two gold pendants, a ring, shoes, make-ups, a lighter and a gold pin – all worth about BND5,000.

Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner heard that the defendant carried out the thievery when she was home alone on the afternoon of April 28 when the employing family was out for Hari Raya visits.

She went into the employer’s bedroom to search for her passport.

She then stole the items, packed them with her belongings and left the house.

The employer came home to find the defendant missing and their belongings gone.

The employer then used an app to locate the stolen phone pinged to be somewhere along Jalan Utama Berakas.

The employer went to the location and found the defendant outside a food stall with the stolen properties.

The employer brought the defendant to the police station where she was arrested for investigation.
