A delegation from the National Institute of Education (NIE) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, recently visited religious schools in Brunei to learn about the teaching and learning of jawi subjects.

Led by senior lecturer at NIE Dr Sa’eda Buang, the group comprised four lecturers and 14 students. The purpose of the visit was to gather insights that could be used to promote jawi skills in Singapore. Recognising the significance of jawi writing for understanding of Al-Quran and Islamic life, Brunei’s religious schools have incorporated jawi instruction into their curriculum.

Through these visits, the delegation aimed to gain a better understanding of Brunei’s approaches to teaching jawi, which could inform the development of similar programmes in Singapore.

The NIE delegation visited Pengiran Muda Mohamed Bolkiah Religious School and Bokok Religious School in Temburong District and Beribi Religious School in Brunei-Muara District.

They were accompanied by senior officials from the Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs. – Azlan Othman
