The Pencak Silat Championship, held in conjunction with the 78th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, commenced at the Youth Centre yesterday.
The opening match featured a spirited competition among the participating teams, including from Brunei-Muara, Belait, Temburong, Tutong, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB), and the Brunei Darussalam Sports School Council (MS SSBD).
The tournament, a key event in His Majesty’s birthday celebration calendar, showcases the martial art of pencak silat and promotes the spirit of sportsmanship and cultural pride.
Deputy Director of Youth and Sports Haji Md Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly, representing the Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports officiated the event.
The championship, held until October 8, is expected to draw spectators and supporters from across the country as the teams vie for top honours. – Fadley Faisal
