Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) organised an event to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) 2023. The celebration, with tagline ‘Turning Disability into Possibility’, aimed to raise awareness about persons with disabilities in the community.
Minister of Health and Chairman of PJSC Board of Directors Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, the guest of honour, officiated the event. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad was present as well.
IDPWD symbolises a unified worldwide action worldwide to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and increase community awareness.
In line with the theme of inclusivity and empowerment, the rehabilitation department organised recreational activities, events, and workshops for persons with disabilities and their caregivers in the community which is open to the public.
The activities, such as open gym, baking class, artwalk, safe patient handling and a prayer workshop, were conducted all through November.
IDPWD chairperson Dr Abang Muhammad Fahmy bin Abang Hepnie delivered an opening remark followed by a speech from Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham. The event was launched following a compilation of a video showcasing activities coordinated by IDPWD committee.
Exhibition booths by the Council for the Welfare of Persons with Different Abilities, Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind, Paralympic Council of Brunei Darussalam, Pusat Bahagia (Community Development Department), UNIKLEARN (An-Nur Harapan), La Vida Brunei, Brunei Sign Language Association, JuruAlih Kitani and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, were set up at the PJSC lobby and will conclude tomorrow. – Lyna Mohamad
