Only a sharp and healthy mind can discern between what is good and what is bad, or what is straight and what is deviant. Thus, the importance of maintaining a healthy mind cannot be overstated.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, highlighted this matter in his titah during the National Israk and Mikraj Commemoration for the year 1446 Hijrah at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre in Berakas on Monday.

Following this year’s theme titled “Prayer Sharpens the Mind”, His Majesty emphasised on how a sharp mind serves as a valuable tool in solving various challenges, guided by the principles of Maqasid Syariah: preserving religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth.

“The essence of perfect prayer lies in achieving khusyu’ by maintaining its pillars and structure. Khusyu’ can only be attained with a healthy mind. Without a healthy mind, it is unlikely for prayer to achieve the desired level of devotion. Moreover, the structured nature of prayer instils self-discipline,” said the Monarch.

His Majesty also said that khusyu’ in prayer is a hallmark of success for the faithful, as Allah Almighty mentions in Surah Al-Mu’minun, verses 1 and 2:  “Indeed, successful are the believers, those who humble themselves in their prayers.”

“This demonstrates the crucial role of a healthy mind in fostering khusyu’ during prayer. Therefore, it is essential to keep our minds healthy. The only way to do so is through prayer. After all, does prayer not bring peace?”

The Monarch went on to say that the hearts and minds of those who pray remain solely devoted to Allah. This devotion ensures that their hearts and minds are clean, tranquil, and healthy. By delving into the wisdom behind each movement and recitation in prayer, the mind becomes trained to resist disturbances, regardless of their nature, which could otherwise lead to harm.

In this regard, His Majesty emphasised the continuous need to protect mental health, not merely through conventional treatments but also by introducing integrated approaches, including Islamic methods of healing.

“A healthy mind will undoubtedly safeguard religion and prevent attempts to exploit or misuse Islam for personal gain.”

Taking on the recent news concerning Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH), which was banned due to involvement in crimes against children and the promotion of deviant practices as an example, His Majesty praised the Almighty over the thwarting of GISBH’s attempt to establish itself in the Sultanate.

“I must stress the importance of vigilance and remind everyone not to underestimate or take such matters lightly. Like a contagious disease, it must be prevented and eradicated without compromise. Failure to act could disrupt societal harmony and even threaten security.”

His Majesty, therefore, urges all of us to consistently remember and instil in our minds that the religious principles we uphold are based on the Ahli Sunnah Waljamaah school of thought. This foundation must continue to be strengthened, held firmly, and used as a bulwark to protect against any form of deviation, ensuring the safety of our society.

“I call upon all levels of society in this country who profess Islam to continue supporting and practising this belief as a way of life. With this adherence, Allah willing, our nation will remain blessed, peaceful, prosperous, and safe, both in this world and the hereafter.” – Lyna Mohamad
