Firefighters moved swiftly to contain an empty classroom fire in five minutes at Chung Ching Middle School in Seria on Saturday. No injuries were reported in the afternoon incident.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), nine Operation ‘B’ Branch firefighters from the Seria Fire Station were dispatched to the school after the distress call was received at 12.47pm.
The authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the estimated damage. In the wake of the incident, the FRD reminded the public to ensure the availability of proper firefighting equipment at their premises.
The public is also reminded to ensure electrical outlets and equipment are switched off when leaving the premises, and to ensure electrical wiring maintenance works are handled by accredited companies, adhering to Department of Electrical Services standards.
Meanwhile, the FRD conducts safety programmes such as Fire Marshal Course, Life Saver 995 and fire safety briefings to raise awareness on safety aspects when dealing with emergencies, including how to operate a fire extinguisher.
