From September 1 to yesterday, a cumulative rainfall of 537.6 milimetres (mm) has been recorded in the Sultanate. This figure significantly exceeds the normal rainfall amount for September (1991-2020), which stands at 235.1mm.
The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department’s (BDMD) Meteorological Observation Station, at the Brunei International Airport, recorded a total rainfall of 60.0mm on September 21.
Brunei Darussalam is currently in the waning phase of the Southwest Monsoon, marked by the persistent dominance of southwesterly winds.
However, active weather conditions are expected to persist in the coming days due to the presence of a low-pressure area near the country, which has created moisture-rich atmospheric conditions, leading to the development of rain clouds.
Active weather conditions are expected to prevail from today to September 25, with intermittent heavy thundershowers affecting various areas across the nation. Wind speeds may reach up to 45 kilometres per hour during or near heavy thundershowers. Over the waters surrounding Brunei, sea conditions are generally slight, with waves below 1.0 metre. The public is urged to exercise caution in light of the active weather conditions.
There is a heightened risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as near riverbanks, especially during continuous heavy rainfall and high tide periods.
Landslides and fallen trees are also potential hazards during heavy showers and gusty conditions.
The public, road users, and fishermen are advised to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts, advisories, and warnings issued by BDMD. Precautions should be taken to ensure safety.
