Senior customs officer’s criminal breach of trust trial adjourned

The trial involving an assistant superintendent of customs (ASC) on charges of criminal breach of trust has been moved to July 16.

Suyati binti Haji Ahmad Besar pleaded not guilty on March 29, 2023 to the three charges of criminal breach of trust by a public servant.

Intermediate Court Judge Radin Safiee bin Radin Mas Basiuni yesterday adjourned the case to give way for case management before trial can begin. The defendant’s bail release on BND10,000 bail, or in two local sureties was extended. Prosecutors Shamshuddin bin Haji Kamaluddin and Nur Hidayatul Aeny binti Haji Zullizam’s charges drafted based on the Anti-Corruption Bureau investigations allege that Suyati, while she was attached to the Finance Unit of the Royal Customs and Excise Department (RCED) as the head of finance, had misappropriated BND982,349.12 in cash, payments of overtime, mileage and shift allowance claims made by the RCED officers.

The defendant is represented by defence counsel Iman Hanisah binti Dato Paduka Haji Hisham of Messrs Brahms Omar. – Fadley Faisal
