Senior citizen denies posing as policeman to cheat people

A 64-year-old local man Mohamad Sambari bin Haji Abu Bakar on Tuesday denied 11 charges including impersonating a police officer and cheating people off their money.

Magistrate Hajah Normazdina binti Haji Mohd Maskub adjourned the case to April 23 for trial dates to be fixed.

Prosecutor Nur Hidayatul Aeny Alisah binti Haji Zullizam’s charges against Mohamad Sambari allege him of cheating a man by selling eight auctioned government vehicles for BND1,995 on February 24.

The defendant allegedly impersonated an Assistant Superintendent of Police by presenting himself in an assumed position to a woman on March 10 at the parking lot of Kampong Sungai Lampai.

A third allegation has it that the defendant assumed the same position with the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) by informing a person that a drug raid was about to be conducted at the person’s house and told him to go into hiding at Kampong Batu Apoi on March 13.

The defendant also purportedly assumed the police colours when he demanded a tailor to provide him the RBPF uniform accessories and beret at a company in Kampong Sengkurong between January 27 and 29. The defendant allegedly repeated the same offence on January 27 at the tailor’s branch in Kampong Tanjong Bunut.

Between January 2 and March 24, the defendant is alleged to have cheated a person by selling a government auctioned boat engine amounting to BND1,140.

The defendant allegedly cheated a person three times in parting with BND1,088 by representing himself as a police officer, on January 29, and February 3 and 14.

The defendant allegedly cheated a woman on March 23 and 25 to part with BND560 by pretending to sell two vehicles. – Fadley Faisal
