Politeknik Brunei’s (PB) School of Petrochemical recently organised a seminar titled ‘Workplace Safety and Health Legislation in Brunei Darussalam – Oil and Gas Industries’.
The event, held at PBs Lumut Campus, brought together 84 students and featured expert speakers from the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), Brunei’s authority on workplace safety and health.
The seminar targeted students from Intake 12 and 13, enrolled in diploma programmes such as chemical engineering, chemical equipment technology, power plant and power system, thermal power plant technology, and storage and transportation technology.
The objectives of the seminar were to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the enforcement of workplace safety and health legislation, specifically within the oil and gas industry; and to educate participants on adopting industry best practices for safety and health, emphasising the Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) framework.
The SHENA speakers shared their expertise on the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009 and highlighted practical strategies for ensuring compliance with safety regulations. They also elaborated on best practices to cultivate a culture of safety in industrial workplaces, particularly within the oil and gas sector. The seminar also incorporated an interactive activity to actively engage students.
This activity allowed students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
