Scouts step-up survival skills

James Kon

A group of 27 Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) 1102 Rover Scout Crew members completed a jungle trek in the areas of Kampong Sungai Akar forest, challenging their mental and physical strength, and enhanced their survival skills.

The trek also tested their bravery and teamwork in working together to complete the seven-kilometre trail.

UNISSA Rover Scout Trainer Zainudin bin Haji Ishak joined the trek.

Eight trainers from Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports oversaw the jungle trekking activity. Before setting off, lead trainer Haji Ramli bin Haji Kurus conducted a warm-up session, a safety briefing and recited a Doa.

The Rover Scout members were taught how to identify trees, plants and flowers for nutritional use found along the route passing through several creeks and four waterfalls – Wasai Jempiras, Wasai Bertangga, Wasai Sarjan and Wasai Lambada.

At Wasai Lambada, the group dispersed for a lunch break, where they were also taught how to cook chicken in bamboo and to make traps to catch fish and shrimps.

These lessons strengthen participants’ survival knowledge.
