As part of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre’s (PJSC) activities to commemorate its Scoliosis Week this year, an appreciation day for scoliosis patients was held at the Lecture Theatre of the PJSC building in Jerudong, which saw the attendance of local patients, caregivers as well as school health nurses.
Scoliosis is a common condition in which the spine curves in a “C” or “S” shape and is often first diagnosed in children and adolescents, however treatment and follow-up may be a lifelong commitment.
Since March 2019, a total of 85 idiopathic scoliosis cases have successfully been performed in PJSC with optimal correction of scoliosis and no permanent complications.
They have all been able to carry out their daily activities including sports about six to 12 months after surgery. In a move to celebrate their resilience, two scoliosis patients – Syazwani Syafiqah binti Md Irwan and Siti Nurwaztul Hayat binti Haji Abas were invited by PJSC to share their personal stories, as a source of inspiration and support to those who are affected by scoliosis in the community.
Nursing officer Hajah Noor Artini binti Haji Abdul Rahman, took the stage to further highlight the path to inspire patient empowerment and led the discussion on ‘Scoliosis in the Community’, expanding on the impacts of scoliosis among the youth.
In line with PJSC’s continued efforts to increase scoliosis awareness, the benefits of Schroth Physiotherapy, a specialised and non-invasive form of treatment designed to use specific exercises tailored towards the unique spinal curve pattern of each patient, was showcased by Hospital Administrator Vivian Tie Suk Kee. – Lyna Mohamad
