Berakas Secondary School welcomed 169 new Year 7 students with the start of the orientation ceremony held at the school hall.
Berakas Secondary School Principal Alexandar bin Bandang and the teaching staff were on hand to welcome the new intake.
In his welcoming remarks, Alexandar shared that the new Year 7 students, aged between 12 and 13, belong to Generation Alpha. Generation Alpha are born in the digital age and have been using technologies such as tablets, smartphones and the Internet from a young age. They are exposed to information rapidly through access to digital platforms and tend to think outside the box and be more open to new ideas.
He added that Generation Alpha are more interested in learning that involves interactive, visual and practical elements and are more comfortable communicating and interacting through digital platforms.
He explained, “By understanding the characteristics of Generation Alpha, the school can provide a learning environment that is appropriate and relevant to the students’ needs. The school will continue to integrate technology into teaching and learning, as well as providing space for creativity and collaboration.”
The school principal also emphasised the importance of consistent student attendance.
He highlighted, “Consistent attendance not only ensures that students are not left behind in their studies but also instils high discipline and commitment. Good attendance is the first step towards success. Remember that attending school each day is an opportunity to gain knowledge, build skills, and prepare oneself for the future. The role of parents and guardians is vital to ensure the success of their children. The support and encouragement at home will complement the efforts made by teachers at school. Therefore, let us work together to ensure our children reach their best potential.”
The principal’s advice to the new Year 7 students was, “This is a new beginning on your educational journey. Make the most of this opportunity. Don’t be afraid to try new things, ask questions, and chase your dreams. Remember, every effort we make today will bear fruit in the future.”
He added, “The school hopes that Year 7 students will become a generation that not only excels academically but also possesses the values and skills required to overcome future challenges. It is also the school’s hope to produce students who are not only successful in examinations but also responsible and resilient citizens on the global stage, in line with Brunei Vision 2035.”
The orientation also included briefings on the school’s academic, administrative, and health and safety procedures. – James Kon
