The Ministry of Education (MoE) held an award ceremony yesterday for recipients of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) scholars, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government Overseas Scholarship for undergraduate studies abroad and the Special Scholarship for secondary and pre-university education at Jerudong International School (JIS) and International School Brunei (ISB) for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh was the guest of honour at the event, organised by the Department of Scholarship Management, at the Banquet Hall, Legislative Council Building.

Acting Director of the Department of Scholarship Management and event chairperson Rosimah Sumaimah binti Haji Matassim said, “The scholarship not only gives students the opportunity to further their studies but it also represents a great responsibility. It signifies the country’s trust in these students to become key contributors to Brunei’s socio-economic growth. Therefore, make the most of this opportunity, strive for greater success, and do not waste this valuable experience.”

She further advised students planning to study abroad to “always remember your origins, maintain national identity and uphold Brunei’s culture. Prioritise good morals and adhere to religious obligations such as praying five times a day, reading the Al-Quran and following the principles of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) wherever you go. Do not deviate from MIB values in your pursuit of success, and avoid adopting cultures contrary to ours”.

According to the MoE, one student received the UTB Scholars award, 45 students with His Majesty’s Government Overseas Scholarship for undergraduate studies, and 20 students at the secondary level and 18 at the pre-university level with the Special Scholarship for international schools.
