    Scenic sojourns

Travel has long been a passion of mine, driven by the excitement of uncovering the unfamiliar and embracing new experiences. Recently, I joined a familiarisation trip arranged by Tourism Malaysia, allowing me to explore Ipoh and Penang – two destinations I had heard much about but never truly experienced.

For many Bruneians, travelling to Malaysia typically means a trip to Miri or Kuala Lumpur. However, Malaysia is a vast country with countless treasures awaiting discovery, and Ipoh is undoubtedly one of its finest.

From the moment I arrived in Ipoh, I could tell it was going to be a truly delightful experience.

    DISCOVER IPOH’S HERITAGE

As the capital of Perak, Ipoh lies in northern Peninsular Malaysia, about 200 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur and 130 kilometres southeast of Penang.

Once known as the “City of Millionaires” for its booming tin mining industry in the late 19th Century, Ipoh is now an exciting tourist spot rich in history and cultural heritage.

Its architecture blends colonial elegance, traditional Chinese influences and contemporary elements.

Among the must-see landmarks is the Ipoh Town Hall and Old Post Office, constructed in 1916. This impressive building epitomises colonial architecture with its grand façade and expansive halls, which continue to host official events and cultural performances.

    REFLECTIVE RETREAT

Tucked away amidst limestone hills, Mirror Lake (Tasik Cermin) is yet another hidden gem in Ipoh, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and serene atmosphere. The lake’s crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding limestone cliffs and lush foliage, offering a tranquil escape from the city. Surrounded by dramatic karst formations, it provides a picturesque and adventurous retreat.

Reaching Mirror Lake involves navigating through a tunnel in a limestone quarry, adding an element of mystery and excitement to the experience.

For an extra adventure, consider visiting Mirror Lake 2, where you can enjoy a boat ride through yet another stunning natural setting.Be sure to bring a camera, as the lake’s reflective waters and spectacular surroundings make it a favourite spot for photographers.

The unique mirror effect provides stunning opportunities for capturing unforgettable images.

    WHITE WONDERS

Did you know that Ipoh is also renowned as a food haven? It’s celebrated for its local cuisine and particularly its white coffee.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of exploring into this local specialty at Kin Loong Valley White Coffee, a charming café situated near the caves by Mirror Lake. White coffee, a traditional Malaysian drink from Ipoh, is known for its unique roasting method using palm oil margarine. This lighter roast creates a smoother, creamier flavour.

Kong Kin Loong, a pioneer of white coffee, popularised this style, and his coffee shop, named in his honour, remains a key part of Ipoh’s coffee culture.

Visitors can enjoy a cup of white coffee paired with local delicacies such as kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs there.

Additionally, a nearby shop offers authentic instant white coffee, making it an ideal souvenir or gift for friends.

    TIN DREDGE LEGACY

For a glimpse into Malaysia’s industrial past, visit the Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No 5 (TT5), the last surviving tin dredge in the country. Built in England in 1938 by FW Payne & Sons, TT5 operated in Tanjung Tualang until 1982, mining tin from the Kinta Valley.

Now a heritage museum, it offers guided tours showcasing the dredge’s machinery and the historic tin mining industry that was vital to Malaysia’s economic growth. Explore this remarkable relic and learn about its significant role in the nation’s development.

    ADVENTURE AWAITS

Another location worth highlighting is Escape Ipoh, a new adventure park in the state, which is definitely a must-visit for thrill-seekers.

Dubbed a “grand outdoor playground for adults,” it offers zip lines, water slides, splash zones, and obstacle courses, all within a sustainable, eco-friendly environment.

Visitors can also camp on-site, making it a popular choice for locals and tourists seeking outdoor fun and adventure.

    CULINARY MUST-TRY

Lastly, no visit to Ipoh is complete without sampling its culinary delights. The Hainan chicken rice, served at a renowned 16-year-old shop in the old town, is a must-try. This pioneer in halal-certified chicken rice offers a variety of dishes in a casual kopitiam-style setting, ensuring a satisfying meal for all who visit.

My trip to Ipoh was truly enchanting. With its captivating historical architecture, tranquil natural landscapes and delightful culinary experiences, Ipoh offers something for every traveller.

I eagerly anticipate returning to discover even more of its unseen wonders. – Adib Noor
