ANN/THE STAR – A scammer has been discovered using the name of Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation to cheat unsuspecting victims.
Johor police chief Comm M Kumar said police were made known about this tactic after a report was lodged by a male victim on Friday.
“A 33-year-old lorry driver has claimed to have been cheated out of MYR150 by and individual who offered him financial assistance by using the foundation name.
“The victim claimed that on Thursday, he watched a ‘live’ Tik Tok video from the suspect that offered financial assistance from the foundation amounting between MYR3,000 and MYR15,000 using six various packages with certain payment charges,” he said on Saturday.
Comm Kumar added the victim was attracted to the financial assistance offered by the suspect whom he later communicated through WhatsApp to get more information about the assistance.
He said the victim then followed the suspect’s instruction by making payment through an e-wallet account using a QR code given to him for registration to get the fund.
“The victim was promised that he would get the aid transferred directly into his bank account within 24 hours upon registration.
“However, after 24 hours, the victim found no money had been transferred into his account while calls to the suspect have been blocked,” he added.
Comm Kumar said police carried out checks with Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation where the foundation did not make any financial aid offers through such packages as claimed.
He added the police would like to remind and advise the public to be more vigilant and not easily believe any offers online especially those using a foundation or a body involving the royal institution.
“The public should verify the matter by contacting such foundations,” he said adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
