ANN/THE STAR – The security of the Sabah government’s website was breached two days ago with hackers purportedly leaking confidential documents on Telegram.
“We have breached sabah.gov.my, which is the website of the Sabah region in east Malaysia. Through our access, we are able to extract 109 files, many of which are classified documents or Excel tables that mention internal information,” reads a post in the “Threatsec” Telegram group.
As proof of the hack, parts of three government documents: an internal memo from Sabah state library, a Sabah Finance Ministry letter to the Semporna district engineer and a Kota Belud district officer’s letter to another state agency, were also posted.
Sabah Computer Services Department cybersecurity chief Ebenezer Godomon said there have been no demands for ransom so far.
He said his department was conducting a forensic investigation on the cyber security breach, including identifying devices and users involved. He said most documents involved were open documents that were shared externally. A few of the documents were considered confidential.
Godomon said that they considered the breach as serious as any data leak. “We won’t be able to provide details as this case is still under investigation. We have isolated the main source of the leakage and are taking necessary correction and corrective action,” he said, adding that the root cause was human.
