His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) officiated the 14th Mahrajan Hafl Al-Takharruj, or convocation festival at the university’s Campus in Gadong on Thursday.
This year’s festival carries a theme “Maqasid Syariah (objective of Islamic law), Basis for Sustainable Development Aspiration”.
The festival is an important celebration in appreciating knowledge, and the progress of the academic world, as well as reflecting UNISSA’s commitment to uphold Islamic values in dealing with today’s global challenges.
Among the contents of this event were exhibitions and demonstrations designed to engage visitors in a meaningful exploration of how Islamic teachings can be applied to achieve sustainable development. Their exhibition offers a unique combination of historical insight, student innovation, research, and entrepreneurial spirit based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah.
These include Al-Imtiaz Gallery which showcases the journey of UNISSA in achieving glory. The exhibition begins with the early history of the university, highlighting important events in its development as a leading institution, guided by the aspirations and ideas of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Others highlighted at the festival include Students Initiatives Towards Sustainable Future in which the exhibition showcases innovative projects led by UNISSA students, which are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasises how students creatively address global challenges through the perspective of Maqasid Syariah.
Another aspect touched was Holistic Development Through Co-Curriculum Excellence where by UNISSA emphasizes holistic development including beyond the lecture room by offering compulsory university programs, co-curriculum that includes skills workshops, uniformed teams and sports arts workshops. – AZLAN OTHMAN
