Royal wedding displays cultural sigificance: Envoys

Foreign envoys yesterday shared praises of the royal wedding ceremonies between His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam hailing it as an event with cultural significance.

Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo said he was fascinated by some unique traditions, such as Majlis Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja.

“I was invited to seven ceremonies, each of them focused on a specific procedure. This is a very precious chance to witness those in person, because all of the unique details are cultural epitomes of Brunei, formed through hundreds of years,” he said.

The traditional Chinese wedding also follows a complex and strict procedure, he said.

“However, nowadays, the wedding ceremony is much more simplified with many young people, especially in the cities, only go through registration and have a wedding banquet with parents and friends.”

Ambassador of Russia to Brunei Darussalam Mkhail Vladimirovich Baranov conveyed a deep sense of admiration for the royal wedding ceremony, impressed by its opulence and breathtaking beauty.

“The gradiosity of the event leaves a lasting impression, highlighting not only its scale, but also the meticulous attention to detail that characterised every aspect,” he said.

The ambassador noted the unwavering dedication of Bruneians to their cultural traditions reflects a profound respect for history and heritage, while also showcasing commitment to preserving and celebrating their unique identity.

“This commitment serves as a powerful reflection of Brunei’s cultural ethos, emphasising the enduring significance placed on preserving and passing down cherished customs and values through generations,” he said.

Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Laurence Bay Siow Hon said it is clear that the royal wedding ceremonies mean a lot to the people of Brunei Darussalam, and how the royal family is deeply respected and revered.

He said the events yesterday were very dignified, and the moment where the royal couple went to greet their parents and thank them for their blessings was a touching moment.

Indonesian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Dr Achmad Ubaedillah said Majlis Istiadat Bersanding Pengantin Diraja was magnificent, and that he was honoured to be part of the guests witnessing the historical event. “Wedding events in Brunei are similar to some wedding rituals in Indonesia,” he said.

One such similarity is the tradition where close family members rub powder on the bride and groom. “It is similar to the siraman ceremony, carried out as part of Javanese wedding.

However instead of scrubbing, water mixed with various flowers is poured over the bride and groom by close family members.”

Vietnamese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Tran Anh Vu said he found the events to be very well-organised and impressive.

“Through these events, I have the chance to learn and understand more about Brunei’s cultural and family values, which are very well-preserved and honoured by Bruneian people,” he said.

He noted that the royal wedding has drawn the attention of the Vietnamese people, and newspapers in Vietnam have covered the event.

“Brunei and Vietnam are two Asian countries and share cultural and historical values. In Vietnam, the traditional wedding is also one of the most important ceremonies in our culture,” said the envoy.

Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Dato’ Raja Reza bin Raja Zaib Shah, who will be completing his term this year, said the ceremony was the third Brunei royal wedding he was able to attend.

“The royal wedding is a historic event in the country, showcasing the uniqueness, beauty and glory of royal customs and traditions that have been brought down from many generations,” he said.

He said the ceremonies are memories that he will never forget, and is delighted to have completed his term in the country on a high note.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona has also witnessed three royal weddings during her term here.

She said every bit of the royal wedding was enjoyable, from the commemorative arches in the city to the regal events at Istana Nurul Iman.

“I am quite amazed to see how the whole country is rejoicing and cheering for the royal couple! May Allah the Almighty bless them always,” she said. – Lyna Mohamad
