Role of youth explored in anti-corruption efforts

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in collaboration with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic China, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Hong Kong International Academy Against Corruption (HKIAAC) is hosting a seminar on ‘Meaningful Youth Engagement (MYE) in Anti-Corruption Work.’

The seminar themed ‘From Awareness to Action: Mobilising Youth to Fight Corruption’ at the UBD Corp Lecture Theatre is attended by officers from ministries and departments, students from universities and higher learning institutions, and youth registered under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

The event marks a step forward in encouraging youth participation in the global fight against corruption, aligning with the goals outlined in the ‘Policy Guide for National Anti-Corruption Authorities on Meaningful Youth Engagement (MYE) in Anti-Corruption Work’ developed by the ICAC, UNODC and the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA).

The guide urges national authorities worldwide to engage youth, raise awareness on corruption prevention, and promote integrity, transparency and accountability as fundamental principles. As a member of IAACA, the ACB also contributed to the formulation of this policy guideline.

Acting Director of ACB Syed Azmal bin Syed Ali was the guest of honour.

Speakers included Roberta Falvo and Christos Vlassis from the UNODC; Assistant Director of Community Relations of the ICAC Debbie Ly; Senior Academy Officer, HKIAAC, ICAC Henry Lai; and Assistant Chief Youth and Sports Officer of the Youth and Sports Department at the MCYS Muhammad Amirul Syazmie bin Ibrahim.

The seminar explored how the policy guide can drive positive change in anti-corruption work. Speakers from ICAC, UNODC and ICAC Elite Youth Leaders shared their experiences and strategies on working together with anti-corruption agencies to create awareness and prevent corruption.

The seminar is followed by a two-day workshop bringing together anti-corruption officials and representatives to collaborate with selected youth.

The workshop will focus on connecting theory with practice in developing an MYE plan that integrates technology and digital platforms, as well as addressing the potential challenges in preparing the plan.
