Robot challenge showcases students’ knowledge, innovation

Team Flutto Robot emerged winner of the inaugural RoboTech and Innovation (ROBIN) Competition’s robo sumo challenge to walked away with BND300 Team Byte Builder and Innovation Catalyst took the top spots for Megatrex challenge and innovation challenge respectively.

Team X AE A X-III and Genius Explorer were first and second runners-up of robo sumo category while Tech Xplorers and Shbew Shbew were in second and third places for Megatrex challenge. Charged with Creativity and Reverse took second and third spots in innovation challenge.

Acting Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman was guest of honour at the event attended by representatives from MoE, Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Petrosains Malaysia, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL).

The competition, organised by Seria Energy Lab, was held at OneCity Shopping Centre yesterday drawing 63 participants.

Robo sumo challenge featured autonomous robot battles while MegaTrex challenge used VEX robots – an educational robotics programme that gave students practical experience in designing, constructing and programming robots to manoeuvre through an obstacle course grabbing items. Innovation challenge saw teams pitching ideas to help the nation achieve the ambition of net zero carbon emissions.

The competition, in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum, the MoE, the Science, Technology, Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre, UBD, BIL, Petrosains Malaysia and Progresif Sdn Bhd, was the final stage of NXplorers Young Innovators (NXYI) journey where top students will be selected to participate in FIRST Global Challenge in Athens, Greece and Petrosains RBTX Challenge in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. – Lyna Mohamad
