Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Zainol bin Mohamed suggested bringing back the School Meals programme in light of the implementation of the integrated education system at the 20th session of the LegCo meeting yesterday.
He said the programme will bring various benefits, including providing an incentive for parents to send their children to school and for children from lower income or vulnerable groups to have access to meals at school.
Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohdd Salleh welcoming the suggestion, said the programme has been under consideration by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with relevant agencies.
However, the minister added that there are also concerns, such as increased food waste based on past observations due to limited or fixed meal options which some students may find undesirable.
“There are pro and cons for the programme, but the ministry will consider its suitability,” Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah. – Rokiah Mahmud
