Responsible waste management is a collective responsibility

I wish to refer to an Opinion letter published on January 1 pertaining to ‘Need for Proper Trash Bins at Shopping Areas’ by Anti-litter.

I agree that we should cultivate a habit of cleanliness in our society, especially since environmental pollutants pose health hazards to humans, harm our planet and detract from our nation’s image as a green and pristine country.

Additionally the idea of having the right and adequate trash bins should not be limited to shopping areas but also within our private residential areas too.

My family and I have frequently seen and suffered the misfortune of our neighbours not having ‘the appropriate bins’ to accommodate the volume and nature of their waste.

Our neighbours include households with large families and with only small trash bins available, their waste – such as food particles and similar items – often overflows and ends up scattered on the ground.

These leftover food particles, often poorly wrapped, are frequently scavenged by stray dogs and cats, leaving a messy trail in their wake.

It may be necessary for the relevant authorities to take appropriate measures, such as conducting surprise inspections in residential areas within the municipality. Additionally, residents should be advised to manage their waste responsibly to avoid causing inconvenience or unhygienic conditions for their neighbors and the environment.

Occasionally, we come across cases where authorities have imposed fines on individuals for such misdemeanour or uncivil behaviour.
