Reception, talks mark 150th anniversary

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam celebrated its 150th anniversary with a dinner reception and technical talks. The celebration was held at the Radisson Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.

Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha was the guest of honour. Also present was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development and Chairman of Board of Architects, Professional Engineers and Quantity Surveyors (BAPEQS) Ir Haji Amer Hishamuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Zakaria.

The honorary chairman of IET Brunei Darussalam Network Ir Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar in his welcoming speech shared that with more than 168,000 members across 150 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia- Pacific, IET represents one of the world’s leading professional societies for communities in science, engineering and technology.

The honorary chairman also reiterated the vision and mission of IET and what the IET Brunei Local Network stood for.

The IET Brunei Darussalam Local Network was formed in November 1997 and aligns itself to IET’s vision and aspiration to share and advance knowledge throughout the global Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) communities. With a mission among others to establish a culture of professionalism, which in turn contributes towards the overall national development of Brunei Darussalam, increased membership and collaboration with relevant stakeholders are key success factors in achieving this mission.

The honorary chariman also said that IET Brunei Darussalam Local Network supports the government in terms of professional registration, participating in judging panels for BICTA, the CIPTA Award, the Shell Eco Marathon, OGDC Science Competition, Award of Best Student to Academia, career talks to secondary schools, as well as taken part as Review Committee for programmes in higher learning institutions.

As of date IET Brunei Darussalam has a total membership of 106 members. A cake-cutting ceremony took place to mark the 150th anniversary celebration officiated by the guest of honour and the honorary chairman of IET Brunei Darussalam.

Following the dinner reception, guests were presented with informative technical talks and updates on ‘Building the networks of tomorrow with 5G’ and ‘Drones Technology, The Past, Present and Futures of Drones’ by representatives from Ericsson Brunei and InnovAero Sdn Bhd.
