Reading webinar series continues, discusses childhood literacy

The fourth session in a webinar series to promote the reading culture was held yesterday.

The webinar, organised by the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) saw a talk on early childhood literacy by lecturer at Universiti Brunei Darussalam Noradinah binti Haji Jaidi.

Her presentation, ‘Early Literacy: The Reading Process and Implications for Teaching Strategies’, discussed several aspects that can bring about changes in early childhood literacy education, such as creating a learning environment with access to various reading and writing activities, involving teachers in children’s learning through conversations and discussions.

The speaker also highlighted the importance of daily routines involving interactive books that introduce children to various genres, including informational books, narratives, poetry, and alphabet books.

Another talk was delivered by Head of Community and Official Events, Youth Volunteers, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Mohd Ashmeer Imtiaz Ahmad on ‘Youth and Reading: Where Do We Stand?’

Mohd Ashmeer said there is a need to foster a reading culture among youth; while some excel in reading, much more effort is needed to generate interest in reading.

The webinar held via Zoom and streamed on the DBP Library’s social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, had over 140 viewers. – Adib Noor
