Raya preparations in full swing

2014

As Hari Raya festivities draw near, celebrants are busy with last-minute arrangements and shopping to welcome the auspicious occasion, marking the end of a month-long fasting month.

Public servant Norhamizah and her friend Ramizah were among those visiting the Let’s Raya bazaar at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, looking for potential bargains or items.

Norhamizah said her Raya preparations are minimal this year, including the attire as most local tailors are now close for new orders.

“I’ll be wearing clothes from previous family events. They’re still in great conditions since I rarely wear them, except for special occasions,” she said.

Ramizah also shared similar sentiments, saying her Raya celebration will be modest.

Meanwhile, Pengiran Nurul Wajihah binti Pengiran Haji Asri said she completed her Raya preparations, only needing to add the finishing touch.

Her family began preparations in the second week of Ramadhan, so they are ready for the festivities.

Mohamad Hakim bin Haji Mohamad meanwhile is focusing more on the open house, as his home is a focal point for visits on the first day.

He believes the absence of pandemic concerns will mean the family can focus on spending quality time together like the old days. For Hamdi, baking biscuits and cakes with loved ones during the fasting month is a family tradition.

“My preparations are similar to last years. I have been busy in the fasting month baking our biscuits and cakes with my grandmother and aunt,” Hamdi said.

Taqim and his family also started their Raya preparations early, which is a step-up from last year, when everything was last minute.

“Almost everything is ready. From kueh and cakes and baju Raya. My family is very much looking forward to the celebrations with the new addition to our family tree as I now have two cute nieces.

“As for our baju Raya, my family is going with two theme colours cream and light purple, which we prepared two months ago. I am now looking out for some kurta to add on my Raya collection this year.” – Lyna Mohamad
