Ramadhan in Brunei: Embark on a cultural pilgrimage

Brunei Darussalam, a small yet vibrant nation on the island of Borneo, offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Islamic traditions and cultural heritage during the holy month of Ramadhan.

This sacred month, observed by Muslims worldwide with fasting from dawn till sunset, envelops Brunei in a profound sense of tranquility, introspection, and devotion.

While activities may slow down during the day, visitors are encouraged to remain flexible and embrace the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture at a more relaxed pace.

One of the highlights of Ramadhan in Brunei is the annual Gerai Ramadhan, which starts at 2pm.

These markets offer a wide range of mouth-watering delicacies and vibrant stalls selling food, desserts, and beverages.

Ramadhan is also a time of heightened compassion and community spirit in Brunei.

The country organises communal activities, such as charity events and open iftar meals, where people from all walks of life come together to break their fasts.

For non-Muslim visitors, dining in restaurants during the fasting period may be challenging, as public dining is not allowed.

However, there are enjoyable ways to experience Brunei’s culinary offerings. Visitors can savour local cuisine in private settings or enjoy meals in the comfort of their accommodations.

It’s also useful to be prepared with small snacks to sustain you during your journey.

Consider lightweight options that can easily fit into your bag and enjoy discreetly while on the move.

Now that you’re ready for a Ramadhan experience in Brunei, here are some destinations and activities that Brunei has to offer, ensuring not just a comfortable stay but a culturally rich one:
