Quality early education essential, says principal

Quality early education forms the foundation for holistic development and character building in students, said Principal of Taman Asuhan Kanak-Kanak Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (TASKA YSHHB) Hajah Mariam binti Haji Lad. She said this at the certificate presentation ceremony at the school premises yesterday.

The ceremony, which recognised the students’ hard work, also aimed to inspire and motivate them to remain dedicated and committed to their studies.

Hajah Mariam shared the initiatives implemented to support academic growth, literacy, numeracy, co-curricular activities and personal development.

She said during the second term of the school year, students were introduced to literacy and numeracy.

The reading monitoring programme for both Malay and English languages, introduced last year, was enhanced through several strategies.

Hajah Mariam said teachers were required to set reading targets for students, track their progress and identify those in need of intervention, ensuring a comprehensive approach to literacy development.

“Parents also played a crucial role, with reading cards signed to confirm their involvement in assisting their children’s learning at home. The data gathered from the initiative was analysed and validated by the reading committee to ensure children’s fluency in reading.”

“Competence in reading is essential, as it enables students to better follow the curriculum in primary school,” she said. For Kindergarten 2 students, Hajah Mariam reported that the reading progress was excellent, with 53 per cent having reached the target reading level.

The remaining 47 per cent would continue progressing towards their reading target in the coming year.

The event also featured a mini concert by Year 1 and 2 students, celebrating the students’
academic and co-curricular achievements.

The annual event recognises the students’ hard work in preparing for the next stage of their education in 2025.

The ceremony was divided into two sessions – the morning session for 158 Kindergarten 1 students and the afternoon session for 175 Kindergarten 2 students.
