The ASEAN Digital Literacy Programme, alongside research conducted by Big BWN Project in 2022-2023, highlighted a significant gap in digital literacy awareness among the Sultanate’s younger generation.
To address this, the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre at the Ministry of Education (MoE), in collaboration with Big BWN Project, introduced the Belia Pintar Siber programme.
The initiative, part of co-curricular activities in schools nationwide, aims to equip the youth with essential digital skills, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Brunei’s telecommunications industry has made continuous efforts to bridge the digital divide, in line with the nation’s vision of becoming a Smart Nation.
Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN), imagine, and Progresif, are supporting the Belia Pintar Siber programme to promote digital literacy and protect the nation from cyber threats.
The first workshop was held on October 8 at the Muda Hashim Secondary School in Tutong District. Representatives from imagine, Progresif and UNN provided students with knowledge on safe online practices, including how to identify scams and fake news, the importance of safeguarding personal information and the risks of cyberbullying.
Interactive activities were incorporated to encourage students to apply these best practices and share the knowledge with their peers, families and friends. – James Kon
