Prizes, donations for 3,581 orphan students

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) through the Community Development Department (JAPEM) with cooperation from the Brunei-Muara District Office at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), held a donation handover ceremony for orphans at national level at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday.

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah attended as the Chairman of the BIBD Board of Directors, along with Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by Tahlil, Doa Arwah and Doa Selamat. Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew presented prizes under BIBD Excellence Student Encouragement Scheme to 11 orphan students who achieved outstanding results in last year’s GCE ‘A’ and ‘O’ level examinations, Brunei Religious Education Higher Certificate (STPUB) and Primary School Assessment (PSR).

The students, who excelled in the GCE ‘A’ level examinations, were Nur Syahirah Najihah binti Mahmood, Najwa Batrisha binti Zul-Fadliy, while outstanding students in ‘O’ level was Nurul Alyssa Ataillah@Alyssa Vatsaloo binti Emran.

Meanwhile, students who scored remarkable results in STPUB were Amir Asyraf bin Haji Asmali, Wahidah binti Aji, Siti Nurul Mu’izzah binti Haji Mayadi, Mazidah binti Madeli, Siti Nurani Az-Zahraa’ binti Haji Wahid and Muhammad Khairulasyar bin Rohaidin.

Students who excelled in PSR exams were Mohamad Waie Zhafran bin Mohamad Fauzi and Muhammad Hadi Zaqwan bin Mohamad Irwan.

The ceremony continued with the handover of donations – BND358,100 from JAPEM Orphans Fund, BND34,935 from Brunei-Muara District Orphans Fund and BND179,050 from BIBD. The donations were presented to 3,581 orphans registered under JAPEM – 2,329 orphans from the Brunei-Muara District, 559 from the Tutong District, 533 from the Belait District and 160 from the Temburong District.

The Secretariat of Orphans Fund welcomes public donations for nationally-registered orphans which can be made through the Management and Administration Division, JAPEM at the MCYS or through the SMS Brunei Prihatin by typing ‘YATIM’ without spaces followed with the amount to be donated, which are 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 50 or 100, and sending the text to 38111 for DST and Progresif subscribers and 39999 for imagine subscribers. – Azlan Othman
