Daycare for senior citizens operated by the private sector would be welcomed, said Minister of Health Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar during yesterday’s 19th Legislative Council (LegCo) session.

LegCo member Yang Berhormat Haji Salleh Bostaman bin Haji Zainal Abidin raised the topic on third-party daycares for senior citizens yesterday.

The minister in his reply said that private companies interested in operating such centres would be welcomed, as it would help accommodate the expected increase in the number of senior citizens due to longer life expectancies in the country.

The minister invited interested parties to work with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) to ensure that such a centre is suitable.

He highlighted an example in Japan, where one such centre is offers free use of its facility, but is funded by a cafe.

He noted that the MCYS has established senior citizen activity centres in all districts except the Temburong District for socialising purposes.
