Police make first arrests in deadly Dutch building collapse

THE HAGUE (AFP) – Dutch police said they had arrested three people in connection with an explosion at an apartment block in The Hague that killed at least six people.

The target of the attack appeared to be a wedding boutique on the ground floor of the building, Tom Verhoeff, a police spokesman, told a television show aimed at seeking witnesses.

Police authorities said on Tuesday they have seized several cars and “cannot rule out further arrests”, adding they had received dozens of tips.

Rescue workers with sniffer dogs retrieved six bodies from the rubble of the collapsed building. Four people are still in hospital, two in serious condition.

Police have appealed for information on a car that was seen speeding away from the scene after the explosion, which took place around 6.15am on Saturday.

“Further investigation is required to determine whether one of the cars is also the car that drove away” from the scene, police said in a statement.

The building has stores on the ground floor and five apartments on the next two floors.

Three of the dead came from the same family. A man and woman aged 45 and 41, and their 17-year-old daughter.

An eight-year-old boy was the sole survivor from that family.

The other three victims were men aged 31, 44 and 63.
