The Marine Police under the Operations Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) foiled an attempt to smuggle contraband from a neighbouring country on Thursday.
According to the RBPF, the incident took place around 11.15pm when Marine Police discovered two suspicious boats speeding from the border of a neighbouring country into Brunei.
Police personnel gave chase and stopped one boat and the driver. The suspect, who is a local man, attempted to escape by jumping into the water. Police personnel however managed to detain the suspect.
Another boat got away by heading to the border of a neighbouring country.
During the search, officials found 908 cartons of cigarettes, 60 bottles of alcohol, two units of vape and cash amounting to BND110.
The case is being investigated under Section 146 (1)(d) of Excise Order, 2006.
All seized items including the boat were handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further action. – James Kon
