    Planting seeds of tomorrow

Kilang ReRoot launched The Balkony Project at Youth Centre last Sunday.

The project aims to promote awareness and involvement in the circular economy, urban agriculture and food security.

Kilang ReRoot founder and Managing Director Siti Jaafar said she hopes the project inspires more people to act and support sustainable food production and reduce their impact on the environment.

“We believe that empowering individuals to grow their own food is a small but significant step in the right direction,” she said.

Over the next eight months, 34 individuals aged 16 to 64 will learn about farming, agricultural practices, and woodworking, receive mentorship from experts in agriculture, and grow their own gardens.

Participants will also be taught ways to optimise small spaces in their homes to grow produce.

The project is expected to run from March to September, with a closing showcase of participants’ products planned for October.

The Balkony Project is one of 142 projects to receive the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) from the United States (US) Mission to ASEAN.

“This grant is very competitive and marks the first time that a Bruneian alumna has received AEIF funding,” said Public Affairs Officer Jeff Barrus at the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.
