Camping is not only a fantastic way to strengthen bonds, particularly within families, but also an enjoyable outdoor activity that offers countless possibilities.
Whether you prefer a minimalist approach with just the essentials or a more luxurious setup complete with blankets, pillows and a hammock, camping provides endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure.
You can choose to pitch a tent at private campgrounds or even set up in your own back garden.
Part of the joy of camping is learning to live with minimal gear in nature. However, a comfortable and homey setup can enhance the experience. For first-time campers, borrowing or renting equipment is a practical option.
As you gain experience, you will discover what suits your needs and what is worth investing in.
Unlike many other countries where public campsites come equipped with facilities such as picnic tables, parking spaces, and designated tent areas, Brunei has limited camping sites, as the activity is not yet widely embraced by the community.
One of the most active groups promoting camping in Brunei is Family Camping Brunei.
Mohammed bin Abdullah, an avid member of the group, initially joined camping activities as a way to fill his time post-retirement. Having previously worked as a public relations officer at the Department of Electrical Services, he first engaged in off-road activities with a 4WD group.
However, it was a trip to the Bario Food Festival in Malaysia that sparked his interest in camping. On the journey back, his convoy spent a night in a longhouse, where some members opted to camp outdoors instead of renting a room.
Seeing this, Mohammed became curious and decided to give it a try.
Upon returning to Brunei, he joined Family Camping Brunei. With no prior experience or proper camping gear, he improvised with a tent previously used for his food stall.
Despite being ill-equipped, he was met with encouragement from fellow campers, which strengthened his enthusiasm for the activity.
Over time, he gradually invested in better camping gear, recognising that some equipment could be costly.
His first international camping experience was at the Sabah Camping Festival in Kundasang, where he realised that camping fosters friendships, especially when travelling outside Brunei to places like Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
His background in public relations, where he engaged with people from various walks of life, helped him develop a strong sense of empathy. This skill proved invaluable in networking with fellow campers, regardless of their background, religion, or age.
“I use my PR skills to keep my communication abilities sharp and gain useful insights into the dos and don’ts of camping, particularly in terms of safety.
“More importantly, camping has helped strengthen my family bond, as it gives us time to sit together outdoors, unwind, and meet new people.”
One of the key advantages of camping is its flexibility – it doesn’t always have to be in remote locations or abroad. If you have a spacious compound, backyard camping can be just as enjoyable.
It offers families, especially those with young children, a chance to disconnect from screens and spend quality time together.
Of course, camping comes with its challenges. Engaging with people of different personalities and backgrounds requires patience, but Mohammed’s experience in public relations has helped him navigate such situations.
Logistical challenges also arise, particularly when camping abroad, as some locations are unfamiliar.
“When you commit to this activity, you need to be open and push aside any shyness. That’s how I managed to mingle with fellow campers abroad. I even learned to sing because I didn’t want Bruneians to be perceived as anti-social.
“I bought a home karaoke box just to practise, as singing is often part of ice-breaking sessions.”
Family Camping Brunei is quite active in organising camping trips, with members voting on locations. Popular sites include Seri Kenangan Beach in Tutong and Muara Beach, with the final decision based on the majority vote. When time permits, Mohammed joins these group trips.
While group camping is enjoyable, solo or small-group camping can also be fulfilling. Mohammed and his wife often camp with their friends Metassan, a former military personnel, and his wife.
Their private camping trips, often in Kundasang, focus on relaxation, enjoying the cool weather, and appreciating the serene sunrise and sunset.
Recently, his sister and her husband have joined their small circle, making the experience even more meaningful.
Mohammed’s friend, Haji Sahari from the 4WD group, proposed an idea for Brunei to host its own international camping festival. As Mohammed resides near Pasir Putih in Tutong, he suggested the area as an ideal venue, envisioning an event called White Sand Camping.
“It would be a unique experience, different from conventional mountain or beach campsites. Our target is to hold the event during the birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for Tutong district.
“We are seeking support from the Tutong District Office and aim to invite campers from Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, and Pontianak, including biker campers, caravans, and 4WD enthusiasts.
“If everything goes as planned, this will be Brunei’s first International White Sand Camping event.”
For those considering taking up camping, Mohammed advises a gradual approach.
“Don’t rush into it or feel pressured to buy expensive gear immediately. Start with basic items and make do with what you have. Once you get the hang of it and enjoy the experience, you can slowly upgrade your equipment.”
He recommends beginning with camping chairs, folding tables, and essential cooking utensils. There’s no need to splurge – camping is about relaxation, not stress. He also suggests looking for second-hand equipment from fellow campers, as good-quality pre-loved items are often available.
“Be wise with purchases. A power supply, whether from cables, a battery, or a generator, is also essential to light up your area and prevent accidents.
“Additionally, invest in proven items that repel insects and other potential dangers.” – Lyna Mohamad
