Philippines warned of increased cyclones

MANILA (ANN/PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER) – In the latter part of 2024, the Philippines is expected to experience an increase in tropical cyclones due to the potential La Nina season, as stated by an expert from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Tuesday.

Pagasa Climatology and Agrometeorology Division officer-in-charge Ana Liza Solis explained that during La Niña, the sea temperature tends to be warmer, leading to a higher likelihood of tropical cyclone development closer to the country.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr also highlighted a 62 percent chance of the La Niña phenomenon developing from June to August.

This condition is typically associated with below-average rainfall, which can delay the onset of the rainy seasons.

Solidum emphasised that this scenario would provide a shorter preparation time for communities facing the threat of tropical cyclones.

“This means there is a shorter lead time. The tropical cyclone is closer, so there is less time to prepare, so we need to be prepared all the time,” emphasised Solidum.

As such, it becomes crucial for communities and relevant agencies to remain vigilant and prepared for potential tropical cyclone impacts during this period of heightened risk.
