Philippines casts a net of change

MANILA (ANN/PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER) – As part of the Philippines government’s plan to secure the country’s fish stocks along with other initiatives for the agriculture sector to ensure food security President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr expressed intentions to implement a fishing ban and additional regulations in specific areas on Tuesday.

“In some cases, it’s necessary not to deplete the fish stocks so that there will be some left for the next season. That’s what we’re currently assessing,” Marcos said in a statement released by the Presidential Communications Office.

“And there are areas where fishing should not be allowed, as they are reserved for breeding to increase the fish population. That’s our plan,” he added.

President Marcos explained that developing Philippine agriculture means not only securing the supply of rice and corn but also involves improving the aquaculture and livestock sectors.

In addition to the fishing ban, Marcos mentioned that the government is already establishing more cold storage facilities to prevent spoilage, as 30 per cent of the fish catch is either degraded or damaged.

“Next in line, we will focus on processing, ensuring that processing takes place in designated areas. These are our plans for the fisheries,” he added.
