Real Madrid’s Bellingham aims for Man City redemption

MADRID (AFP) – Jude Bellingham edged Real Madrid ahead in their Champions League play-off against Manchester City, but then his week swiftly took a turn for the worse.

The England international was sent off in the first half as Los Blancos dropped two points in the Spanish title race on Saturday at Osasuna.

The midfielder will at least be fresh for the second leg clash with City at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, with Madrid holding a 3-2 lead in the tie after their victory at the Etihad Stadium last week.

Bellingham felt he had let his side down with his dismissal for dissent, despite insisting the referee misunderstood him, and he apologised to his team-mates.

All will be forgiven if he helps pull Madrid past Pep Guardiola’s City and into the last 16.

“Enough said about the misunderstanding, just wanted to apologise again for leaving my team-mates in such a tough position and thank the fans for their support and understanding,” wrote Bellingham on social media.

“We’ll see each other on Wednesday, (playing) at home.”

It was his second red card for arguing with referees since arriving in Spain from Borussia Dortmund in 2023.

Despite his occasional frustration with officials, Bellingham has mostly been able to enjoy himself in Spain.

His goals were crucial as Madrid won La Liga last season, and he helped his side claim their record-extending 15th Champions League trophy at Wembley, against his former side Dortmund.

Bellingham was previously linked with City but on arrival at Madrid said once the Spanish giants came in for him he got “goosebumps” and that his heart nearly stopped.

“I’d always been aware of the interest from England so that was pretty normal,” he said after joining.

“Money is not a thing for me. I don’t think about money at all when I make these kind of decisions. I never have and will – I play the game purely out of love.

“It wasn’t a case of other teams are bad or they weren’t good but, for me, Madrid is the greatest.”

In his fairytale first season Bellingham scored 23 goals in 43 games across all competitions, as well as converting a penalty in the Champions League quarter-final shootout Madrid won against City.

Liverpool can handle title tension: Slot

London (AFP) – Arne Slot insisted Liverpool can handle the mounting pressure of the Premier League title race after the leaders were hampered by nerves in their tense win against Wolves.

Slot’s side head to Aston Villa on Wednesday knowing a victory would move them 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal in their bid to clinch a record-equalling 20th English title.

But Liverpool, in dynamic form for much of the season, have looked less secure of late and almost blew a two-goal lead in Sunday’s 2-1 win over lowly Wolves at Anfield.

The Reds had already suffered a costly collapse in the Merseyside derby draw just days earlier when Everton’s James Tarkowski scored a stoppage-time equaliser.

Liverpool’s reserves also crashed out of the FA Cup with an embarrassing fourth-round loss at second-tier Plymouth recently, leading to fears the treble chasers are beginning to crack as expectations increase.

Reds left-back Andrew Robertson admitted after the Wolves game that it was natural for the players to be nervous as they get closer to the finish line.

But Slot pointed to Liverpool’s ability to grind out several wins by a one-goal margin already this season as proof they won’t crumble under pressure.

“It is because we are going to the end of the season, not because of us but what people make of it,” Slot told reporters on Tuesday.

“We have won other games at home or away by one goal when it was also tight. I remember Crystal Palace away when it was tight in the end.

“If this happens at the end of the season you guys are going to talk about nerves.

“To secure a win in the Premier League, if we are winning 1-0, is going to be a lot of defending and hard work.”

Arsenal have added to the concern at Anfield with a 15-match unbeaten run in the league since their last top-flight loss at Newcastle on November 2.

Several of Liverpool’s players have title race experience after winning the Premier League in 2020 under Slot’s predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

Slot has also successfully navigated the anxiety of the final weeks of the season in his Dutch title-winning campaign with Feyenoord.

But the Reds boss has mixed feelings about how useful those triumphs will be in helping Liverpool this season.

“We lean a lot on the players. They have to show up and bring the performance. We don’t present a meeting on how to deal with the pressure, that is not how it works,” he said.

“It helps that they are used to playing big games with lots of pressure, but don’t make that too big. We must not over-value experience.

“It is difficult to take experiences from that time with Feyenoord, different players, different opponents, different league.

Arne Slot speaks to his Liverpool players. PHOTO: AP

“And the ones who won the league here in corona time (during the pandemic) with no fans in the stadium, at one point they were 25 points up, so there was hardly any pressure then.”

Slot knows Villa have the potential to add to the pressure on Liverpool, but he believes their hard-fought success against Wolves will stand them in good stead.

“They have a great home record. When you get the fixture list, Villa away you all know is one of the tougher ones you can face. Very good manager, always has a very good game plan,” he said.

“We didn’t play our best on Sunday but to win gives us a different feeling to the Everton game when we conceded in the last second.

“It tells you that you have a team that fights until the end. These are the games you have to win if you want to achieve something.”

Slot will be without Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez against Villa, with the latter facing a “number of weeks” out after suffering a hamstring injury.

Let’s knit and chill at the movies

VIENNA (AFP)Armed with yarn, needles and hooks, dexterous moviegoers flock to a cinema in Vienna every month to combine their favourite hobbies: knits and flicks.

With many having turned to time-honoured crafts like crochet and knitting during the Covid-19 pandemic, a growing number of enthusiasts are looking to connect with the Austrian capital’s craft community in real life.

Vienna’s Votiv Kino has become the latest movie theatre in Europe to offer craft cinema nights, a trend trailblazed by Nordic countries.

“We saw that it exists in the US, in Denmark, in Finland, in Germany,” said avid knitter Luisa Palmer, who initiated the knitting nights at the Votiv Kino with a colleague.

Since the launch event in December, the monthly knitting nights have sold out, drawing almost 180 visitors each time.

With the lights only slightly dimmed while “The Devil Wears Prada” was showing on Sunday, the cinemagoers got crafty.

This general overview shhow visitors enjoying their knitting during the projection of the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ at the Votive Cinema in Vienna, Austria, on February 16, 2025. PHOTO: AFP

“It is a bit ‘grannycore’, but I find it very calming and pleasant. Why not let out your inner granny?” Alexander Koch, 28, quipped while crocheting away.

Kaja Vospernik, a 23-year-old fashion student, who is knitting a sweater, told AFP that she was excited about “meeting new people, who have the same interests”.

“I really enjoy knitting while watching movies or listening to podcasts, so of course the cinema is a great place for that,” Vospernik said.

The movie seemed to take a backseat as passionate knitters and crocheters — some of whom were donning their handmade knitwear — kept chatting and working away.

“A lot of people started knitting and crocheting during the pandemic and out of necessity, only did it at home alone. That’s why a lot of people now want to do it with others,” 32-year-old Palmer said.

In an increasingly digital world with many hunched over computers at work, people enjoy “creating something with their own hands you can later even wear,” said Palmer.

“Cozy films that you have already seen” are best suited for knitting, Palmer added.

And Vienna’s “diverse” crafting community, which is “open to all age groups”, has meanwhile grown to an estimated 1,000 people, Judith Hasloewer, who co-initiated the event at the cinema, told AFP.

“You can just sit in the theatre and knit and keep to yourself, but if you feel like company, you’ll definitely find it here,” she said.

Crafting your own garment allows you to “connect to reality, as it slows you down” while it also symbolises a bold statement against “fast fashion”, Hasloewer, 27, said.

According to Votiv Kino spokeswoman Lisa Stolze, knitting nights are the latest addition to their special shows — which include cinema breakfasts and screenings for parents and their babies — that are designed to “appeal to the different interests of our audience”.

Duterte supporters take case against impeachment to Supreme Court

MANILA (AFP)Lawyers supporting Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte filed the first legal challenge against her impeachment at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, saying it had been unconstitutionally rushed through without proper oversight.

Duterte, onetime ally of President Ferdinand Marcos, is facing a Senate trial on charges of “violation of the constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption and other high crimes”.

Among the crimes outlined is an alleged assassination plot against Marcos.

Tuesday’s filing seeks to toss the impeachment and prevent the Senate from proceeding with a trial, citing the lack of time devoted to its evaluation in the House of Representatives, where it was introduced and passed the same day.

“There was no proper deliberation. There was no proper discussion,” lawyer Israelito Torreon, one of 29 petitioners, said outside a venue near the court.

“The VP was not even summoned to answer for the alleged allegations … so there was no due process at all.”

He added that Duterte had “nothing to do” with the filing while rejecting the notion it represented “last ditch legal gymnastics”.

“This is a legitimate attempt on the part of the people in order to stop a constitutionally void .. impeachment complaint,” he said.

The battle between the Marcos and Duterte dynasties has dominated early campaigning for the May mid-term elections, when a dozen Senate seats that could determine the makeup of the vice-president’s tribunal are up for grabs.

Political analyst Richard Heydarian called Tuesday’s filing an attempt “to buy time and momentum”.

“It’s a sign they are not fully confident with surviving a prospective Senate trial,” he said.

Duterte has insisted that the assassination charge, stemming from an expletive-laden broadcast in which she claimed to have instructed a man to kill Marcos were she to be killed first, was simply venting frustration with the administration.

Threats of physical violence against political opponents — often dismissed as jest — featured regularly during the presidency of her father, Rodrigo Duterte, who has found himself in hot water after his first speech of the campaign season.

Speaking at a rally last week, the former president suggested a bomb might be the most effective way to clear seats for his party’s slate in the coming election.

“What should we do now? Let’s just kill the sitting senators so their seats become vacant. If we kill 15 senators we’ll all get in,” he told a crowd in capital Manila.

On Monday, the Philippine National Police filed a complaint with the Justice Department, saying Duterte’s comments represented “incitement to sedition”.

In addition to a dozen Senate seats, more than 18,000 positions ranging from congressperson to provincial-level posts, will be decided on May 18.

The race is widely expected to set the stage for the 2028 presidential election.

Tesla begins hiring in India after Musk and Modi meet

MUMBAI (AFP) Electric vehicle maker Tesla has begun hiring in India, with the company of tycoon Elon Musk issuing advertisements days after US President Donald Trump’s right-hand man met with India’s premier.

Tesla has more than a dozen job listings on its website, for both the capital New Delhi and economic hub Mumbai, including for a store manager and service technicians.

The job listings were posted on the employment website LinkedIn on Monday.

Tesla’s India push comes after Musk met one-on-one with Prime Minister Narenda Modi in Washington, raising questions over whether the world’s richest man was meeting the Indian leader in an official or business capacity.

Musk has been seeking business opportunities in the world’s most populous nation, with media reports last year suggesting it was scouting for factory and showroom locations.

Musk has also sought to open his satellite internet service Starlink in India, with communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in November saying the company would be allowed to operate if it complies with “security” regulations.

The Tesla logo is seen in a Tesla showroom in New York City on February 16, 2025. PHOTO: AFP

The potential launch of Starlink — with its network of low Earth orbit satellites capable of providing internet to remote and disconnected locations — in the world’s most populous country has been accompanied by fierce policy debates and alleged national security concerns.

Musk was due to visit India in 2024, following suggestions that he would announce major investment plans, but later cancelled the trip due to what he said were “very heavy Tesla obligations”.

While India’s electric car market is small, it still represents a growth opportunity for Tesla which is battling increased Chinese competition and its first slump in annual EV sales.

India has long had steep import taxes for electric vehicles — Musk once complained they were among the “highest in the world” — which had prevented Tesla from making inroads in the absence of local manufacturing.

But India last year cut import taxes on electric vehicles for global automakers that committed to invest USD500 million and start local production within three years.

New Delhi had had offered quick tariff concessions ahead of Modi’s Washington visit, including slashing duties on high-end motorcycles — a boost to Harley-Davidson, the iconic US manufacturer whose struggles in India have irked Trump.

India has also already accepted three US military flights carrying more than 300 migrants as part of Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Teenage fan of K-pop attacked and seriously hurt in Mexico

(ANN/KOREA HERALD) – K-pop fan communities in Mexico are uniting for a school violence victim, calling for justice for a 13-year-old girl who reportedly faced intense bullying from peers due to her passion for K-pop.

As per various reports from Mexico, the teenager named Fatima Maite sustained a broken pelvis after falling from the third floor of a building at her school in Mexico City on February 13. Reports suggest that the fall resulted from school bullies, with some sources claiming that she was pushed off the building by them, while others state she was pressured into jumping.

A video circulating on social media depicts a girl dangling from a building’s balcony while another girl pushes her off, though it has not yet been officially verified that the victim is Maite.

The victim’s father alleged that the school overlooked his daughter’s earlier complaints regarding violence directed at her, which contributed to the escalation that caused her injury. He alleged that his daughter was pushed from the building and that at least three individuals took part in the assault.

The Mexican police are investigating the situation and have verified that the father has formally filed the incident as an instance of school violence.

The South Korean Embassy in Mexico participated in the current social media campaign calling for justice regarding the harassment and violence inflicted on Fatima.

“We join in condemning the attacks, harassment and school #Bullying that Fatima suffered because of her preference for #KPop #Hallyu #KoreanCulture,” it posted in Spanish on its official X account.

K-pop fans in Mexico are denouncing the violence using the hashtag “#JusticeForFatima.” Certain K-pop fan groups, including BTS Army, pledged to engage in efforts against bullying and collect donations for the victim’s family.
