Pact signed to boost Brunei’s maritime industry

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between the governments of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the sideline of the monarch’s working visit to Dubai.

The MoU on the Recognition of Certificate Issued under the Provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers, 1978 as amended was signed by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, on behalf of the Government of His Majesty while the Government of the UAE was represented by Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei.

The MoU for the Recognition of Certificate Issued under the Provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers, 1978 as amended, was an initiative to expand and develop the maritime industry of the Sultanate in terms of human resources.

For Brunei Darussalam seafarers, competency certificates recognised by the UAE open up employment opportunities on merchant ships registered under Brunei and the UAE. The maritime institutions of the two countries will be able to be co-recognised by each other.

Brunei Darussalam had previously signed a similar MoU with at least 15 countries – Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, Pakistan, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Croatia, India, Indonesia, Singapore, United Kingdom, and Vietnam and now, the UAE.
