A security guard was sentenced to seven years and six months’ jail with three whippings after he pleaded guilty to three counts of housebreaking.
Intermediate Court Judge Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar handed down the sentence to the defendant, 29-year-old local Muhammad Azizul bin Abdullah, on Monday.
The court took into account the defendant’s previously clear records and his guilty plea.
The court also emphasised the seriousness of Azizul’s crimes and the need for deterrence.
Azizul was a security guard posted at Sungai Liang Industrial Park. He pleaded guilty to three counts of housebreaking committed between April 1 and 18.
Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid revealed that Azizul had made multiple unauthorised entries into a multipurpose hall and stole various speakers valued at BND10,640.
The thefts were discovered by a sound technician on April 26, who found several speakers missing and lodged a police report.
In his confession, Azizul admitted to breaking into the hall and stealing the speakers, some of which he sold for BND20 and exchanged for drugs.
Only five of the stolen speakers were recovered. – Fadley Faisal
