Over 5,000 enrol into religious schools

Some 5,161 new students registered for religious school across the country yesterday, comprising 2626 male and 2535 female students.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), The Brunei-Muara District saw enrolment of 3,768 students; 705 in Belait District with 705, 597 in the Tutong District and 91 in the Temburong District.

Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman oversaw the registration of new students at Bengkurong Religious School and Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Malik Religious School yesterday.

Permanent Secretary at the MoRA Haji Mohammad Rosli bin Haji Ibrahim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religion) at the MoRA Haji Mohd Serudin bin Haji Timbang and Director of Islamic Studies Haji Shamshol bin Haji Omar were also present.

The minister toured classes and interacted with the new students and parents and was briefed on the new enrolment.

This year, some 120 students are studying at Bengkurong Religious School from preparatory classes to Primary 6 students while at Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Malik Religious School, there are 178 students.

Religious schooling as a special stream in the education system was first established on September 16, 1956,a legacy of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam.

Under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the religious school system in the country continues to see improvements.
