    Over 500 shops gutted in massive fire in India

    NEW DELHI (XINHUA) – A massive fire on Friday gutted at least 500 shops in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

    However, no loss of life or injury was reported in the blaze.

    The fire broke out inside a cloth market in the Basmandi area of Kanpur, about 88 kilometres southwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

    “A massive fire broke out in the Basmandi area here gutting at least 500 shops. The fire broke out at multi-storey commercial complex,” a police official said.

    Following the information about the fire, authorities rushed over a dozen fire tenders to the spot to douse the blaze.
